Drug Inspector Salary

Drug Inspector Salary in India (2026): Pay Scale, In-Hand Pay and State-Wise Comparison

A central-government Drug Inspector (UPSC recruitment for CDSCO) is placed in Pay Level 8 of the 7th Pay Commission, ₹47,600 to ₹1,51,100 basic pay per month. With Dearness Allowance (60% at present) and HRA, the take-home at entry works out to roughly ₹73,000 to ₹83,000 a month depending on the posting city. State Drug Inspector scales differ, so the number you actually earn depends heavily on which government you join.

This guide separates what is confirmed in official notifications from what comes from third-party estimates, shows the in-hand calculation step by step, and explains why one pay figure can carry different “levels” in different states.

Drug Inspector Salary at a Glance

Item Central (UPSC / CDSCO)
Pay level (7th CPC) Level 8
Basic pay range ₹47,600 – ₹1,51,100 per month
Entry basic, annualised ₹5,71,200 (basic only, before DA and HRA)
DA (from 1 Jan 2026) 60% of basic
Illustrative in-hand at entry ≈ ₹73,300 (Z city) to ≈ ₹82,800 (X city), before TA, CGHS and tax
Third-party estimate (Times of India report via Medical Dialogues) ₹70,000 – ₹85,000 per month
Latest central vacancy 186 posts, UPSC Advt 07/2026 (applications closed 17 July 2026)

Basic pay is not take-home pay. Most “Drug Inspector salary per month” pages quote the basic scale and stop there, which is why the figures people see on payslips look so different.

Central Drug Inspector Salary (UPSC / CDSCO)

Pay level and scale

UPSC Advertisement No. 07/2026 invited applications for 186 Drug Inspector posts in the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The post sits in Level 8 of the 7th CPC pay matrix, with an entry basic of ₹47,600. Selected candidates can be posted anywhere in India, with CDSCO headquarters in New Delhi.

Older UPSC notices describe the same post as Pay Band 2 (₹9,300–34,800) with Grade Pay ₹4,800. That is simply the pre-2016 label for what is now Level 8.

Worked example: from basic pay to in-hand pay

Assumptions: entry basic ₹47,600, DA 60%, current central HRA rates (30% X, 20% Y, 10% Z cities, with minimum floors of ₹5,400 / ₹3,600 / ₹1,800), and a 10% pension-scheme contribution on basic plus DA.

Component X city (e.g., Delhi) Y city Z city
Basic pay ₹47,600 ₹47,600 ₹47,600
DA at 60% ₹28,560 ₹28,560 ₹28,560
HRA ₹14,280 ₹9,520 ₹4,760
Gross ₹90,440 ₹85,680 ₹80,920
Pension contribution (10% of basic + DA) − ₹7,616 − ₹7,616 − ₹7,616
Net before TA, CGHS, income tax ₹82,824 ₹78,064 ₹73,304

Formula: Net ≈ Basic + (Basic × DA%) + (Basic × HRA%) − 10% × (Basic + DA).

Why this matters: DA is calculated on basic and is the biggest add-on, and HRA depends on the posting city, not your home town. Transport allowance (which is itself linked to DA) and CGHS deductions come on top, and income tax depends on your regime and other income, so your actual slip will differ from this table.

What if DA rises to 63%? By the official price-index formula, DA from 1 July 2026 works out to 63%. As of early October 2026 reports, the Union Cabinet had not yet approved it, so 60% remains the rate in force. At 63%, the same entry-level officer would see net pay rise by about ₹1,285 a month, plus arrears back to 1 July once the order is issued.

What serving CDSCO Drug Inspectors actually drew

CDSCO publishes pay disclosures for its headquarters staff under RTI. In the August 2022 disclosure, Drug Inspectors appeared at Level 8 with basic pay between ₹55,200 and ₹64,100, and several at Level 9 with basic pay of ₹71,300 to ₹73,400. That is higher than the ₹47,600 entry figure because of increments and career progression over time. It gives a more realistic picture of where a mid-career Drug Inspector’s basic pay lands than the scale’s endpoints do.

State-Wise Drug Inspector Salary

Each state notifies its own scale, DA and HRA. The table shows the most recent notification I could verify, and how current that figure is, because several pages online repeat figures from years ago.

Drug Inspector Salary Notes that the table cannot carry

Maharashtra (MPSC Drug Inspector salary)

the ₹41,800 entry basic is lower than the central ₹47,600, but state DA, HRA and ladder differ. One third-party estimate puts in-hand at ₹63,000 to ₹66,000; treat that as an estimate, not an official figure. MPSC’s 2025 recruitment also accepted Pharm.D alongside B.Pharm and M.Pharm.

Uttar Pradesh

UP uses the same Level 8 scale as the centre. The UPPSC advertisement was reopened with a corrigendum dated 19 September 2026, restating the qualification to comply with a Supreme Court order (see the eligibility section below).

Gujarat

the same ₹44,900–₹1,42,400 scale is labelled “Level 8” in Gujarat’s June 2026 notice but “Level 10” in Odisha, and is the central Level 7 scale. Level numbers are not comparable across governments, so compare rupee amounts, not level labels.

Bihar and Jharkhand

both notices quote the old Pay Band plus Grade Pay format. The Level 9 mapping is the usual conversion, which is why these two states start higher than the centre on paper (₹53,100 vs ₹47,600).

Telangana

the ₹51,320 scale comes from the 2022 notification, so check whether a newer pay revision applies before relying on it.

Tamil Nadu

The 2026 TNPSC notice places the post at Level 20 of the Tamil Nadu pay matrix. The 2019 notification for the same post quoted ₹37,700–₹1,19,500, while a few 2026 aggregator pages quote a much higher range. Confirm the amount in the current TNPSC PDF.

Kerala

The verified figure is for the Ayurveda Drugs Inspector post. Check the Kerala PSC notification for the allopathy post you are targeting.

Assam, Punjab, MP, Karnataka

widely repeated numbers for these states come from old notifications or aggregator tables. I could not confirm a current official figure, so I am not listing one. Looking up the latest notification is the only reliable route.

How to Read an Old Notification: Grade Pay Decoder

Many state notices still use the pre-2016 “Pay Band + Grade Pay” format. The 7th CPC replaced it with the pay matrix, and the conversions below appear in the notices above.

Old scale Matrix entry pay Where it appears
PB-2 ₹9,300–34,800 + GP ₹4,600 ₹44,900 Gujarat Class-II notice
PB-2 ₹9,300–34,800 + GP ₹4,800 ₹47,600 Central Drug Inspector (UPSC)
PB-2 ₹9,300–34,800 + GP ₹5,400 ₹53,100 Bihar, Jharkhand

This is the quickest way to sanity-check a “salary” blog post: if it quotes a grade pay, convert it before comparing.

Career Growth and Pay Progression

At CDSCO, the promotion route from Drug Inspector runs to Assistant Drugs Controller (India), which is Level 11 (₹67,700 – ₹2,08,700). Under the Assistant Drugs Controller Recruitment Rules 2020, a Drug Inspector in Level 8 with six years of regular service in the grade is eligible for promotion. Beyond that, the ladder continues through Deputy and Joint Drugs Controller toward the Drugs Controller General of India.

State ladders are similar in shape. In Maharashtra, for example, the path runs from Drug Inspector to Senior Drug Inspector, Assistant Commissioner and Joint Commissioner (Drugs).

Pay grows through annual increments, DA revisions (twice a year) and promotions, which is why a ten-year officer’s basic pay is well above the entry figure.

How to Become a Drug Inspector (and Why the 2026 Supreme Court Ruling Matters)

Eligibility under Rule 49

Qualifications are set by Rule 49 of the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945: a degree in Pharmacy or Pharmaceutical Sciences, or in Medicine with specialisation in Clinical Pharmacology or Microbiology, from a recognised university. Rule 49 also mentions 18 months of experience in manufacture or testing of Schedule C drugs (or three years of inspection experience) in a proviso.

The point most salary pages miss

In State of Haryana v. Krishan Kumar (2026 INSC 63), the Supreme Court held that states cannot add experience as an essential qualification for recruitment. The Court read the experience proviso as a condition for authorising an inspector to inspect Schedule C manufacturing, not as an entry barrier. Haryana and Karnataka recruitment rules were affected, the Allahabad High Court has taken the same view of Uttar Pradesh’s rule, and UPPSC reopened its advertisement in September 2026 with a restated qualification.

What this means for you: a fresh B.Pharm or Pharm.D graduate can now apply for many state posts that earlier asked for 18 months of experience. Always read the latest corrigendum, because older articles still list the experience requirement.

Selection and cost (central)

  • UPSC fills the post through “recruitment by selection”: shortlisting from the online application, a recruitment test only if applications are very large, then an interview.
  • The UPSC fee is ₹25; women, SC, ST and PwBD candidates pay nothing.
  • The age limit reported for the 2026 advertisement is 30 years, with relaxation of 3 years for OBC and 5 years for SC/ST. MPSC’s 2025 notice allowed up to 38 years for open and 43 for reserved categories.

The 8th Pay Commission: What It Changes

  • The Union Cabinet approved the 8th Central Pay Commission’s Terms of Reference, notified on 3 November 2025, and the Commission has an 18-month mandate, which points to a report around mid-2027.
  • The government has said the implementation date is for it to decide. It has not been fixed, so current salaries are still on the 7th CPC matrix with DA at 60%.
  • Finance Ministry statements indicate there is no proposal to merge DA with basic pay ahead of the new Commission.
  • New pay will come from a fitment factor applied to existing basic pay. That factor has not been decided, so any figure for “Drug Inspector salary after the 8th Pay Commission” is speculation.

State governments revise their own pay later, usually after the central decision, so state Drug Inspectors typically see changes with a lag.

Common Mistakes When Reading Drug Inspector Salary Figures

  1. Treating basic pay as in-hand pay. DA, HRA, TA and deductions change the number substantially.
  2. Comparing level numbers across states. ₹44,900 is Level 8 in Gujarat’s notice, Level 10 in Odisha and Level 7 centrally.
  3. Using old Pay Band numbers (e.g., ₹22,000–87,000 + Grade Pay) as if they were current.
  4. Applying central DA to state posts. States announce their own DA and HRA.
  5. Assuming the 8th Pay Commission is already paying out. It is not.
  6. Looking for private-sector Drug Inspector jobs. The post exists only under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act in government drug control departments. Pharma industry QA/QC and regulatory roles are different jobs with different pay.

FAQs About Drug Inspector Salary

What is the starting salary of a Drug Inspector?

At the centre, ₹47,600 basic (Level 8). In-hand is about ₹73,000–₹83,000 with 60% DA and HRA. State starting basics range from about ₹41,800 (Maharashtra) to ₹53,100 (Bihar/Jharkhand mapping).

Is the Drug Inspector salary in India higher in the centre or in states?

Neither is always higher. Bihar and Jharkhand start above the centre on paper, while Maharashtra and Gujarat start below. State DA and HRA rules also change the final figure.

Do I need work experience to become a Drug Inspector?

Not as an essential qualification for recruitment, according to the 2026 Supreme Court ruling. Experience matters for being authorised to inspect Schedule C manufacturing units after you join.

Does the salary change with the city of posting?

Yes. HRA is 30%, 20% or 10% of basic depending on whether the city is X, Y or Z class, and transport allowance also varies. Centrally, you can be posted anywhere in India.

When will the DA rise to 63%?

By the formula it applies from 1 July 2026, but it needs Cabinet approval. When the order arrives, arrears from July are normally paid with it.
